The Ruben J. Williams Foundation is a nonprofit organization and collaboration between academic institutions in the US and in East Africa. Our purpose is improving health care. The original founders of RJW were comprised of physicians and lawyers who got together to try and figure out a way to contribute, using the expertise within the group. The foundation was created with the purposes of bringing groups together from two sides to provide health care in a manner where both sides would benefit from the interaction. People who would not necessarily have had the benefit of that type of expertise would get the health care they need. Together with local schools, we also seek to identify and sponsor academically suitable students with a professed desire to study medicine and/or pursue a career in surgery/anesthesiology.
Dr Onyawadume is currently enrolled in the Master’s in Public Health (MPH)at Harvard University, Class of 2023 with a Global Health focus. As an RJW Foundation Scholar, she is working with Orthopaedic Link and collaborators in Botswana to complete her MPH practicum. Under the supervision of Dr. Ananthakrishnan and Dr. Park (Program for Global Surgery and Social Change at Harvard University), she will provide an on-the-ground assessment for capacity building of spine surgery in Botswana. Orthopaedic Link has created a capacity-building algorithm for spine surgery in developing countries based on procedure, diagnosis, and the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery Surgical Assessment Tool. This analysis will augment efforts to develop pathways for surgical systems capacity building in Botswana.
