“Our hearts go out to the families, friends and loved ones of those who have lost their lives due to the coronavirus pandemic“
The COVID pandemic has created unexpected and extraordinary circumstances that have significantly impacted the RJW Foundation. Travel restrictions, elimination of clinical opportunities, the interruption of our engagement with the community as well as Dr Hayanga‘a important role in the relief of COVID- The RJW Foundation was temporarily unable to provide volunteer and growth opportunities in 2021. So we spent 2022 creating those initiatives and developing a plan to make a difference.
RJW Foundation is looking forward to making an impact on healthcare in 2023. To ensure the future productivity we have implemented safety measures as well as leveraging technology. We will provide the necessary support and guidance for successful implementation of research to maximize its impact on healthcare constrained communities. Our efforts will focus on providing education, development, and resources while working with partners who share our vision of a healthier and more equitable world. Dr. Hayanga hopes to use 2023 to reinvigorate the efforts of the foundation.
The RJW foundation was created with the purposes of bringing groups together from two sides to provide health care in a manner where both sides would benefit from the interaction. People who would not necessarily have had the benefit of that type of expertise would get the health care they need. Together with local schools, we also seek to identify and sponsor academically suitable students with a professed desire to study medicine and/or pursue a career in surgery/anesthesiology.
Dr J.W. Awori Hayanga, the Co Founder of the RJW Foundation is on the front line caring for COVID patients and is a key leader in addressing this momentous global health crisis.
Dr Hayanga is lead author in recommendations on treatment of COVID patients according to the The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the official journal of the American Association of Thoracic Surgery and is considered the most prestigious journal for thoracic and cardiovascular surgeons. Dr Hayanga has also been appointed as a special advisor by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
As COVID-19 and its variants continue to affect the global community, Dr Hayanga has taken decisive action to slow the transmission of coronavirus as well as affectively treating those diagnosed with the novel virus temporarily creating a shift in foci, including altering research priorities.
Dr Hayanga is dedicated to safeguarding and improving the public’s health. With continued improvements in vaccine availability combined with improvements in public health measures and a reduced rate of community prevalence Dr Hayanga hopes to dedicate more time to the RJW Foundation in 2023.
In Kenya, over 90 percent of pregnant women attend at least one ANC visit during pregnancy. However, Kenya is currently among the 10 countries that contribute the most neonatal deaths globally.
The highest odds of neonatal mortality were among neonates whose mothers did not attend any ANC visit and whose mothers lacked skilled ANC attendance during pregnancy. Pregnancy complications are often only identified at great effort and expense, too late for treatment, or not at all.
Beyond the ambition to change the physical nature and effects of disease, the foundation seeks to influence the trajectory of thought and ambition and inspire future generations to follow in a culture of concern and responsibility for others with a strong emphasis on assisting those within the community who may need more help than others, to believe in the power of collaboration and to opt if ever given a choice to lift others up first.
Born in Nigeria but raised in Botswana, Louisa found her passion for Neurosurgery early once she became aware of the stark reality of having only 1 neurosurgeon serve Botswana’s population. In 2009, Louisa graduated from Smith College with a degree in Chemistry and Sigma Xi Honors in research. After working at Beth Israel Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston for several years, she matriculated to Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. In medical school, she conducted spine research with a collaborator at Gaborone Private Hospital and Princess Marina Hospital in Botswana. She graduated with multiple research awards and a Humanism in Medicine award. In 2019, she matched to the West Virginia University Neurosurgery Program where she met Dr. Hayanga (Ruben J Williams Founder).
Louisa is currently enrolled in the Master’s in Public Health (MPH)at Harvard University, Class of 2023 with a Global Health focus. As an RJW Foundation Scholar, she is working with Orthopaedic Link and collaborators in Botswana to complete her MPH practicum. Under the supervision of Dr. Ananthakrishnan(Orthopaedic Link) and Dr. Park (Program for Global Surgery and Social Change at Harvard University), she will provide an on-the-ground assessment for capacity building of spine surgery in Botswana. Orthopaedic Link has created a capacity-building algorithm for spine surgery in developing countries based on procedure, diagnosis, and the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery Surgical Assessment Tool. This analysis will augment efforts to develop pathways for surgical systems capacity building in Botswana.
