Dr. Hayanga is a Professor in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the West Virginia University Medicine. He is the Director of the WVU Heart & Vascular Institute ECMO Program and Medical Director of Research. Board certified in Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, he completed his surgical training at Johns Hopkins University and University of Michigan followed by cardiothoracic and transplant surgery training at the University of Washington and University of Pittsburgh respectively. He served as an Alfred Sommer Scholar during his MPH at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, as a 2008 World Health Organization (WHO) Patient Safety Scholar, a Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Fellow and Senior Medical Adviser to the Deputy Secretary in Washington, D.C. He is a 2021 Johns Hopkins Leadership Fellow and holds a Masters degree in Healthcare Leadership (MHL) from Brown University and certificate in Artificial Intelligence and Business Strategy from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is an expert Health Policy panelist with RAND Corporation, elected member of American Association of Thoracic Surgery (AATS) and editorial board member for Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Journal of Heart & Lung Transplantation and LUNG and expert reviewer for numerous journals including Nature and JAMA. He is a grant-funded researcher and has authored over 200 peer-reviewed papers. His clinical work and research focus on ECMO, transplantation and application of data analytics in prevention, diagnosis, and mitigation of end-stage pulmonary disease. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons, and the American College of Chest Physicians. He was invited to write the guidelines for the use of ECMO in patients with severe COVID-19 disease in JTCVS.
Wangeci Gitata-Kiriga is a Senior Consultant for Kijani Group. She is a lawyer by training and a women’s champion at heart. She has focused her energy over the last 10 years on rural livelihoods and improvement through certification and trade across Africa. She is a graduate of Nottingham University Law School (U.K.), co-founded RJW because, in her words, she was looking to “be a part of something that transcends [her] immediate universe.” The daughter of Kenya’s first female dentist, she has seen firsthand the impact an individual can have on a community. As a believer in the adage of teaching a man to fish, she was also part of a grassroots movement at the age of 15 called the Youth Network Center that involved peer to peer training about HIV prevention and AIDS through the auspices of Kenya Anti-Rape Organization..
She joined the board of Common Cause in 2007. She serves on the board of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Young Professionals, Los Angeles Chapter. An alumni board member of Common Cause Georgia, Women's Policy Group and International Club of Atlanta she brings to RJW board experience, a deep belief and clear vision of what the Foundation can accomplish.
Thomas Keane MD is a Chicago native who graduated with degrees in mechanical engineering and English Literature from the University of Illinois. After working as a business consultant for Ernst & Young, he completed an MD at Albany Medical College, a surgery internship at Johns Hopkins, a radiology residency at New York Presyterian Cornell, and a vascular-interventional fellowship at Johns Hopkins, where he was the chief fellow. He has served as a clinical assistant professor at Johns Hopkins, as Senior Medical Advisor to the Deputy Secretary of Health & Human Services, and is currently a voting member of the US Council for Graduate Medical Education (www.cogme.gov) in Washington, DC. He is a practicing interventional radiologist who specializes in providing care to rural and underserved populations.
Matthew McGirt MD is an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and the Director of Clinical Research in the Department of Neurosurgery at Vanderbilt University. Dr. McGirt specializes in the surgical treatment of spine tumors, trauma, and complex spinal reconstruction for adult and pediatric spinal deformity. His research on spine disease primarily focuses on clinical outcomes and cost-utility research. Dr. McGirt has published over 130 papers and given over 100 podium presentations at National medical meetings. He has been awarded over a dozen research grants and has received six awards from national neurosurgery societies including the Galbraith Cerebrovascular Award, Synthes Brain Trauma Award, Augustus McCravey Award, Julius Goodman Socioeconomic Award, Ronald Bitner NeuroOncology Award, and the Larson Spinal Disorders Award for his advancements in Neurosurgery and Spine Research. Dr. McGirt is currently working with the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health to established the first exchange program between Neurosurgery training programs in the U.S. and East Africa.
Dr. Sonia Eden is a Michigan native and ABNS (American Board of Neurological Surgery) board-certified neurosurgeon. She specializes in minimally invasive surgeries to treat conditions such as brain and spine tumors, traumatic spine injury, nerve ailments as carpal tunnel syndrome, sacroiliac joint fusions, and more.
Dr. Eden earned her Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Yale University and went on to complete her medical degree and residency at the University of Michigan. Dr. Eden also completed a minimally invasive spine surgery fellowship in Memphis under Semmes Murphey neurosurgeon and board chairman Dr. Kevin Foley.
D. Eden is a member of multiple medical associations, including the AANS (American Association of Neurosurgeons) and the CNS (Congress of Neurological Surgeons), where she was askedto participate in the Vanguard Leadership in Healthcare course. This year-long program empowers neurosurgeons to gain the skills and knowledge to become effective and impactful leaders in the field.
Along with her educational achievements, Dr. Eden has had a stellar career. Some of her career highlights include serving as Chief of Neurosurgery at Harper University Hospital, being elected as Interim Chair of Neurosurgery at Wayne State University School of Medicine, and authoring a textbook on the surgical treatment of the sacroiliac joint.
Dr. Eden is very passionate about the topic of health equity. Health equity is defined by the IOM (Institute of Medicine) as “providing care that does not vary in quality because of personal characteristics such as gender, ethnicity, geographic location, and socioeconomic status.” She is a proud founding member of the American Society of Black Neurosurgeons, where she also serves as Vice President.
She enjoys a team-based, collaborative approach to healthcare and mentoring students and residents. She lives in Oxford, Mississippi, and practices from the Semmes Murphey Clinic Oxford location. She is proud to serve as a caretaker to her mother. She satisfies her childhood desire to be a veterinarian with a pet menagerie that includes a Weimaraner, a Bengal cat, and an African grey parrot.
Akbar Waljee, MD, MSc was born and raised Nairobi, Kenya. He spent many years volunteering with the Kenya Red Cross, and at Kenyatta Hospital where his interest in medicine and gastrointestinal diseases flourished. Akbar graduated from Emory University with Bachelor of Science in Biology and his Doctor of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency training at the University of Michigan, and spent a year as faculty. He has since completed a Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Michigan with an interest in inflammatory bowel disease. During his fellowship, he was awarded his Masters of Science in Health and Health Services Research. He currently serves as faculty at the University of Michigan.
John L. Tarpley, MD, FACS, FWACS, is the program director of the Vanderbilt General surgery Residency Program in Nashville, TN. He trained at the Johns Hopkins Hospital where he completed his surgical residency. He received the ACS Surgical Volunteerism Award for his international work serving the medically underserved population of Nigeria. Dr. Tarpley has provided surgical services during volunteer medical expeditions to Nigeria over the course of 28 years in collaboration with his partner Donald Meier, MD, FACS, FWACS. In making these trips, he has provided surgical and medical training to numerous Nigerians and has been dedicated to improving the health care system in that country. Dr. Tarpley's efforts encourage many fellow faculty members, residents, and medical students to join him in his humanitarian efforts. His work in Nigeria is based on equalized health care and health care education in the country and has provided humanitarian opportunities for American physicians and nurses who have traveled there to provide health care to patients and training to Nigerian physicians and surgeons.
Dr. Heather K. Hayanga (Kaiser) is a cardiothoracic anesthesiologist at West Virginia University Hospital. Dr. Hayanga received her medical degree at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. She completed her Fellowship for Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She also studied Health Policies and Comparative Health Systems at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Publications include: Residential segregation and access to surgical care by minority populations in US counties and Perspectives of future physicians on disaster medicine and public health preparedness: challenges of building a capable and sustainable auxiliary medical workforce. Dr Hayanga has been a valuable member of The RJW Foundation since 2009. Her education, training and expertise has been an immense value to the RJW Foundation in helping healthcare constrained communities.
Ted A. James, MD, MHCM, FACS is the Chief of Breast Surgical Oncology, Co-Director of the BreastCare Center, and Vice Chair of Academic Affairs, Surgery at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA, USA. He is also Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He has held a number of leadership roles in local and national organizations aimed at improving quality in health care. Dr. James serves as faculty for professional and executive leadership development programs at Harvard Medical School, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the Association of American Medical Colleges. He enjoys sharing his experience and partnering with other health care professionals to develop practical solutions to modern health care challenges. He was a surgical oncologist and Director of Undergraduate Surgical Education at the University of Vermont. He received his undergraduate training at McGill University, and his medical degree from Drexel University- Medical College of Pennsylvania. He completed a general surgery residency at North Shore University Hospital followed by a surgical oncology fellowship at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Dr. James has been involved in the American College of Surgeons and served as immediate past Chair of the Resident and Associate Society. Dr. James has served as Cancer Committee Chair at his local institution, Cancer Liaison Physician to the National Commission on Cancer, and as a member of the Board of Directors for the New England Division of the American Cancer Society. He is active in clinical and outcomes research; including studying quality measures in cancer care. He is involved in overseas surgical missions, and has worked closely with organizations to address issues related to healthcare advocacy and patient education. Dr. James was recently awarded with the Commission on Cancer Award for outstanding performance for his work promoting quality of cancer care. He has contributed numerous publications to the medical literature and holds an academic appointment at the University of Vermont.
Malaika Awori-Gunther. Malaika Awori completed a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and obtained her MDCM degree from McGill University in Montréal, Québec. Prior to medical school, she worked as a toxicology research scientist and study director in drug development, co-authoring several publications. She is currently a resident physician in Family Medicine at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Montréal. Upon completion of her residency, she will work at a community clinic where she intends to cultivate her passion for Family Medicine to serve patients of all ages and backgrounds. She has a dream to improve the health care of women. In addition, she aspires to bridge the gap in care in African countries where access to care in the rural areas is limited and the number of fetal-maternal deaths is amongst the highest in the world. She joined RJW in the hopes of contributing towards improving surgical care of women who experience complications during pregnancy and/or labor. She also hopes to create awareness amongst pregnant women concerning how to better take care of their health and how to identify life-threatening complications that warrant medical intervention.
Nikki Fragoso manages the marketing, business development and administrative responsibilities for Ruben J Williams Foundation. She received her Bachelor of Applied Science in Business and Organizational Management at The College of Central Florida. Nikki is the Founder of Lung Cancer Outreach and Support, an organization that provides resources to those who have been diagnosed with lung cancer and mesothelioma. Nikki has served on philanthropy committee boards for organizations such as The Central Florida Special Olympics. Nikki has provided community support services to The Red Cross Sound The Alarm Home Fire Campaign and The Alzheimer’s Association. She has also been a key speaker for the Kellys Kids Foundation, a non profit organization that provides support to disadvantaged and low income families that have a member currently suffering from a life threatening illness or disability in the Metro Detroit area. Nikki joined our team to contribute her marketing, business development, and management skills with philanthropy experience to help grow the RJW Foundation.
Joshua Lwala worked for Kenya Breweries Ltd from 1990 to 1995 as a Depot Manager overseeing resources worth over Kshs 100 Million and 1996 to 1999 as a sales Representative in varies parts of Kenya, 2000 to 2001 as Area Sales Manager in charge of Western Kenya managing seven Sales Representatives and 24 beer distributors. He joined Grand/Laico Regency Hotel in 2002 to date as Sales and Marketing Executive and Sales Account Manager respectively in charge of both corporate, NGOS and International Organizations market segments. He is currently pursuing a B.COM (Marketing Option) at the University of Nairobi. He was Chair of the Department of Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center from 1985 to June 2006, and served as Vice President of International Programs and Director of the Bobst International Center from 2010 to 2018. Dr. Brennan is currently Senior Vice President of International Programs. He has lectured throughout the world and authored or co-authored more than 1,100 scientific papers and book chapters, and three books on soft tissue sarcoma. He has served as Director of the American Board of Surgery, Vice President of the American College of Surgeons, Chairman of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, and President of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the James IVth Association, the Society of Clinical Surgery, the International Gastric Cancer Association, and the American Surgical Association. He has been awarded Honorary Fellowships in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, of England, and in Ireland, the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and Canada.
